New member of the family

My friend April and her fiance, Ruben, had 2 dogs. Ruben’s dog, Posey, is an older dog, she’s a mix and she is trained. About 6 months ago, April got a new boxer puppy, Sara. When April and Ruben moved in together, that meant Posey and Sara moved in together. Naturally, Sara wants to play all the time. Posey, not so much. Posey owned the house before and now she has to share. Not only that, Posey is older and tamed, Sarah is just a little over excited. So the situation was always Posey snapping at Sara or Posey eating all the food so Sara couldn’t have any or Posey not sharing her toys. Posey is not a mean dog but she was used to be a single child for a very long time and Sara came in and took that away from her. If Sara were older and a bit tamed, maybe it would be different but Sara is just too hyper and not her fault, she is a puppy.

So April and Ruben tried to work things out. Sara was April’s baby and they were very attached to each other. She tried playing with both Posey and Sara but it always ended up in a fight. Well, eventually, April came to the realization that this wouldn’t work out. Sara needed a friend that was on the same pace as her or at least closer than where Posey was at. As much as April did not want to give her away, she knew it was better for Sara. So who is the first person she thinks of? Jason and I! Of course we will take her! Topaz needed a playing buddy bad and this might be the perfect fit. Sara is still 6 months and Topaz is 2 years so this should work out fine.

So April and Ruben bring Sara over one Sunday. We let Topaz and Sara play in the back yard (under our supervision) and they played like crazy! A little rough but nothing too serious. They hit it off right away. So we took her in. Now, we had to change her name to Sierra because my sister’s name is Sarah and that is just weird. Sierra has the same tone so she would answer to it.

The first couple of days we left her in the yard, she got out. We think she was just unfamiliar with her surroundings so she was searching for something she knew. After we closed up a few holes, she was fine. She is still only 6 months, so she is hyper and she doesn’t know any commands yet. We have taught her to sit and stay when the doors are open.

Topaz has accepted her. Sierra does annoy Topaz in some cases. They do play fight a lot. Sometimes though, Sierra will go after Topaz and Topaz is not in the mood so she will snap back at her. Sierra keeps going at it though. Sierra will take Topaz’ toys but Topaz is being a good sport about it. I am super proud of Topaz because she could get really mad but she isn’t. I think she understands that Sierra doesn’t know any better yet. I think Topaz will be a good mother dog. Also, it’s kind of funny because Topaz is being really good now and listening. I think she is showing off and trying to get attention, it’s really cute!

Here is a video of how crazy Sierra is right now. Jason is trying to control her but it will take some time.
