Lost and Found

So it was July 3rd/4th, Tuesday night Wednesday morning at about 2:30am when Jason and I got home to no Topaz. Topaz is our dog of almost 2 years. We got her as a puppy from the animal shelter back in 2005 and she was already named Topaz and was classified as a Boxer mix. Although many people say she is either Great Dane or Greyhound mix. Either way, she is a cutie! She is super playful and an excellent watch dog. She is not one to run away. She has gotten out before but she doesn’t go anywhere. So we were surprised to see our gate pushed open and no Topaz in sight. We searched the neighborhood right away thinking she was nearby but she didn’t come. The next day was July 4th so the pound wasn’t open. We kept searching our neighborhood. It was raining hard that day too. That night, we had a huge firework show in our neighborhood at Woodlawn Lake. With all the people walking through our neighborhood, we thought for sure we would find her but she never turned up. So the next day we went to the San Antonio Animal Control Facility. This was seriously one of the saddest things I have ever experienced. There were rows and rows of dogs. They looked at you hoping that you would open their cage and set them free. Some cried, most barked, and others just lay there really sad and scared. I just could not believe how many dogs there where. There were 3 buildings of dogs. Unfortunately, there was no Topaz. Apparently, they had an unusual high amount of dogs because many dogs got scared of the fireworks and jumped the fence. Even though it is illegal, we do have neighbors that pop fireworks all week long and we think she got scared and just ran off. So Friday rolled around and I went to the animal facility again. Again, it was so sad and there was no Topaz. The facility will hold dogs for up to 2 days and then they will either send them to a shelter for adoption or will put them to sleep. I wasn’t aware of this but San Antonio has one of the highest animal euthanasia rates in the nation. Unbelievable! I know people are trying to make a difference: http://www.changethesapound.org/. I just wanted to take all the dogs with me. By Friday evening, 3 days had passed and no Topaz. I thought either someone stole her or she would end up at the animal facility within the next 2 days. We decided to take a drive around the neighborhood just to see if she would turn up after dinner Friday evening. About 6 blocks away from our house, we spotted her in someone’s front yard. We called her and she looked up and ran straight to our car and jumped in. She was muddy and she was crying. I just couldn’t believe we found her! She had no cuts but she did seem a little sick either from being in the rain or not eating enough. We bathed her and she slept in our bed that night. It was so good to have her back. You just don’t realize how much your dog means to you until they aren’t there. We are glad you are back Ms. Topaz!
